Many business owners accept giving back to the community as a social responsibility. The National Federation of Independent Business noted research that was done by Ernst & Young and the Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund. They found that “89% of entrepreneurs donate money, both personally and through their companies.” Also, “62% say giving back makes their companies more successful in the long run.” Large corporations are usually associated with charitable causes they spend thousands of dollars on. Where does that leave the small business owners like us? What usually sets back small business owners is the lack of time and/or resources. Well, we can also make an impact in our community through different actions and services. Here is how:
Holiday Food Drives
Throughout the holidays, many organizations put together food drives to help certain groups. Whether it is around Thanksgiving, Christmas or any other holiday, participate. Encourage your employees and customers to bring non-perishable items that can be donated to local food banks and organizations. This method does not require your absolute time or money.
Offer Your Skills or Services
You are a leader in your industry and have valuable expertise. Your knowledge is very valuable to others. You can offer classes to residents, clients and members of your community. The UPS Store website states, “Your expertise in business can also be useful to nonprofit institutions. Choose an organization that could use your help and schedule to share at a time that is convenient for you.”
Create a Community Service Day with Your Team
This is a great idea because community service can serve as a team building event. Set aside a time and date. Choose an organization, and invite all of your staff. Whether everyone is volunteering at a food bank, taking care of kids in an orphanage, reading to children or elders in a hospital or helping plant trees, the service will make you feel great! Also, there are companies that allot paid time for employees who volunteer a certain amount of hours.

Besides that fabulous and heartwarming feeling it leaves in your spirit, volunteering and contributing to your community also has many other benefits.
